Juicing with the seasons

4 nourishing juice recipes for spring, summer, autumn, and winter – inspired by what nature gives us in Switzerland

Juicing isn’t just a morning habit. It’s a way to stay connected — to your body, to the seasons, to the land you live on. Especially here in Switzerland, where nature is generous but also wise in its timing, I’ve found that making juice seasonally feels more intuitive, more satisfying, and somehow more alive.

Here are four juice recipes, one for each season, focusing on local, seasonal produce — and in some cases, wild herbs you might find just outside your door.

Let’s begin where the year does: in spring.

🌱 Spring Cleanse – The Awakening Juice

Key Ingredients:

  • Wild nettles (wear gloves!)

  • Green apple

  • Lemon

  • Cucumber

  • Celery

  • Fresh mint

Why it’s good now:
After the heavy foods of winter, your body naturally leans toward cleansing and detoxification. Nettles are rich in iron, chlorophyll, and minerals — and they support liver and kidney function. Cucumber and celery hydrate, while lemon and mint brighten the flavor (and mood).

Should I buy organic?
Yes — especially for celery and apples, which are on the “Dirty Dozen” list. Nettles can be wild-harvested but pick away from roadsides or fields sprayed with chemicals.

☀️ Summer Glow – The Cooling Juice

Key Ingredients:

  • Watermelon

  • Red currants or raspberries

  • Cucumber

  • Fresh basil

  • Lime

Why it’s good now:
This one’s all about hydration, skin glow, and lightness. Watermelon is high in lycopene and electrolytes, cucumber keeps you cool, and red berries add vitamin C and antioxidants. Basil supports digestion and gives a beautiful herbal depth.

Should I buy organic?
Yes for berries, which absorb pesticides easily. Watermelon is lower risk but go organic if possible.

✨ Tip: Keep the seeds in the watermelon for added zinc and magnesium (your Hurom will filter them out anyway).

🍂 Autumn Root – The Grounding Juice

Key Ingredients:

  • Carrots

  • Pear

  • Beetroot

  • Ginger

  • Thyme (fresh)

Why it’s good now:
As the weather cools, your body needs stability and warmth. Root vegetables like beet and carrot are grounding and full of immune-supporting compounds. Pear adds softness and fiber, while ginger and thyme boost circulation and help prevent autumn colds.

Should I buy organic?
Yes for beets and carrots, as they grow underground and absorb residues from the soil. Pears too, if you keep the skin on.

❄️ Winter Fire – The Immune Juice

Key Ingredients:

  • Blood orange or regular orange

  • Carrot

  • Turmeric root (fresh or powdered)

  • Black pepper

  • Apple

  • Cinnamon (optional)

Why it’s good now:
Winter is the season for immune support, inflammation control, and inner fire. Oranges and carrots bring vitamin C and beta-carotene. Turmeric is your winter warrior, and the pepper helps your body absorb it. The spice combo adds warmth and depth to cold mornings.

Should I buy organic?
Yes for apples and citrus. And especially for turmeric if you’re using it regularly — conventional versions can be contaminated with heavy metals.

Final Thought: Eat (and Juice) Like You Live Here

One of the most powerful things we can do for our health is to listen to the land we live on. In Switzerland, that means honoring the rhythm of the seasons: wild greens in spring, bright berries in summer, earthy roots in autumn, and protective citrus (although not local) in winter.

Seasonal juicing isn’t about perfection — it’s about connection. To nature. To our bodies. To the small rituals that remind us we’re part of a bigger cycle.
